Irish musician and songwriter Imelda May has teamed up with Musicians Against Homelessness and Crisis, the national charity for those experiencing homelessness, to create a compelling video featuring her poem “Home.” This piece is drawn from her recently launched poetry EP, Slip of the Tongue. The initiative also supports Crisis’ new Home For All campaign, which aims to ensure that everyone who had temporary housing during the pandemic can secure a permanent residence.
In the emotionally charged “Home,” Imelda, a well-respected artist and poet, explores her personal journey with heartfelt honesty as she addresses themes of comfort and love. Her gentle voice resonates with many as she shares the poignant lines, “When you open your heart and let me alone. You’ll know who I am, because I feel like home.”
Drawing inspiration from her own challenges in making a living, coupled with the powerful yet vulnerable stories of the remarkable individuals she has encountered, Imelda’s aim with this touching work is to unite people in providing support for those in need. The accompanying visuals also highlight the diverse individuals that Crisis helps every day, facilitating their search for housing, employment, health, and overall well-being.
Reflecting on the song and video, Imelda expressed: “Having a home offers a sense of security that many of us often overlook. Particularly since the lockdown, we’ve come to understand how vital it is for our survival. It enables us to work, enjoy, nourish our families, entertain, unwind, and much more. It’s difficult to conceive of not having the fundamental safety of four walls and a roof.”
