Although Calgary may not yet have a global reputation for its music scene, it stands out as one of Canada’s premier environments for creative talent. This year marks the inaugural expansion of the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp Series to Calgary, where twenty selected emerging Canadian musicians will engage in an esteemed residency program at Studio Bell, the home of the National Music Centre, from March 14th to March 17th, 2019. Among the talented participants are notable artists such as Toronto’s Korea Town Acid, Raf Reza, Mah Moud, and Loony, as well as Calgary’s own Hounds and Ashley Velvet.
This year’s lineup of musical panelists features the Polaris Music Prize-winning artist Lido Pimienta, celebrated American soul and R&B icon Jerry Williams Jr. (widely known as Swamp Dogg), and Gavin Rayna Rossum, who plays synthesizer and lends his vocal talents to LCD Soundsystem. Contributing to the educational aspects of the series are RBMA tutors, including Foxtrott, a Montreal sensation known for her innovative sound, and Toronto’s versatile producer and vocalist River Tiber.
